As a neurodivergent (ND) parent with two ND children, I often wonder how my kids’ unique ways of thinking are understood and supported in the classroom.

So I was pleasantly surprised when my eldest son told me his class includes thoughtful accommodations that support all students, not just ND ones. Twice a day, during each class block, every child can take a 10-minute Movement Break whenever they need it, just by raising their hand. No questions asked. They return when ready. This simple practice builds trust, respects autonomy, and allows kids like my son to meet their sensory needs without disrupting others.

The classroom also has a basket of noise-muffling headphones available to anyone who needs a quiet moment. My son doesn’t use them often, but he takes comfort knowing they’re there when he needs to focus or escape the noise.

What I love most is that these supports are for all children. No one is singled out or labelled. The environment normalizes different needs and, in doing so, helps everyone learn better.

After all, while ND children may face unique challenges, many of those challenges exist across the spectrum. Classrooms that embrace inclusion don’t just support ND kids, they empower every child to thrive. Happy Mama here!

I’m honestly positively shocked to hear this in the best way. It sounds like such a thoughtful, well-designed environment for all children, not just ND ones. Out of curiosity, in which country is this? Here in Switzerland, schools are slowly making progress, but many are still not well equipped for these kinds of accommodations. It often comes down to resources, experience, and sometimes persistent parent pressure. So it’s really encouraging to hear that your son’s school is already doing this so naturally. Happy to see environments like that exist.
