Why is for me an oral feedback often better than written feedback:

Direct exchange: You can immediately ask questions and clarify misunderstandings.

Tone & body language: Voice, facial expressions, and gestures convey nuances that are often lost in writing.

Faster impact: Feedback is received right away and can be acted upon immediately.

Less room for interpretation: Written feedback can be harder to decode for people with autism or ADHD, since irony, subtleties, or implied messages may not be clear. Orally, they can ask for clarification.

Avoiding overload: Long written texts can be exhausting for people with dyslexia, dyscalculia, or concentration difficulties.

Oral communication often makes information easier to absorb.

Emotional safety: A friendly tone of voice or a smile signals appreciation. Written criticism can easily come across as harsher than intended.

Flexibility: Neurodivergent people often benefit when feedback happens in dialogue, they can ask for examples, request clarification, or take time to process what’s been said.

Fully agree – oral feedback is giving more substance and avoids misunderstandings. Different to instructions, that are often better in writing.. ^^

I’d rather have the feedback written so that I can process what is being asked of me at my own pace and then come back with questions.

I’m autistic and have auditory processing differences. I’m not sure whether that’s because I can’t hear with my right ear, but it’s definitely one of the reasons I prefer written communication. The others are my social anxiety, rejection sensitivity, and internalized ableism.

Plus, if I have everything in writing and the company tries to fire me without a real reason, I will have all the feedback in writing to prove that. This happened to me already: I didn’t have written comments on what I needed to improve in my OKRs, and they used that against me.
